Very sad to hear about Joe. Although we were not good friends in high school, we became good friends just after high school. Harvey, we didnt call him Joe, was one of a kind. Anyone that really hung around with Harvey knew that he was really really smart, but really didnt show it just hanging around with him. Had so many great times with him, hunting, fishing, camping, working at C & H, drinking, wrestling around in the mud when we had one to many! When he met Mary she became one of the group and loved hanging around with all of us as well. She was special and he knew it!
When Joe went into the AirForce we kind of lost track of each other but stayed in touch about our growing familes through Xmas letters. Mary let me know about his condition about two years ago and that is when I was able to connect with him again. I went to see him and Mary shortly after hearing about it. He was still Harvey, his smile, humor, and most inportant his dedication to his family. Attached is a picture from that visit.
Rest in peace Harvey!!

Great tribute Mike . So many stories. I don't think he ever turned down a chance to go hunting or fishing.

Some of my classmates may or may not know that it was Joe Harvey who got me started into finding my sport through distance running. We were teammates on the reserve basketball team our junior year at LSE. Late in the season Coach Puelz gave us a practice of just running continuous minutes around the girls' gym court. I was not conscious of doing anything noteworthy, but Joe came up to me afterward and said that he thought I would make a good distance runner if I went out for Track. It was a one sentence compliment. But that was how it all began. I took the advice and went out for Track. There were a number of thrilling moments that would unfold through 1974, and training would continue through about 1980. Perhaps the ultimate thrill was coming so close to breaking the four minute mile one time. But then the story has continued to unfold in distance running coaching, and that story isn't over yet, as I coach currently at David City high school.
Carole and I attended Joe's funeral on Saturday in Lawrence. My heart was and is just full of gratitude to Joe for that one sentence compliment in 1969. I have marvelled at all of its subsequent results. Joe Harvey was a great friend, classmate and teammate, and is sorely missed! Rest in peace, my brother.
