Dale Martin Ashmun, 73, of Glenwood, Arkansas passed away from complications of open-heart surgery on April 24, 2025.
He was born on March 17, 1952, to Van S and Lyra Jeanette Ashmun and stepmother Rita Camp Ashmun in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Dale graduated from Southeast High School and the University of Nebraska with a master’s in education with Honors. Local Lincolnites may remember him as "The Guru Rooty-Tute Kazooie". Dale had many interesting jobs and enjoyed extensive traveling. After an early stint as a disk jockey in Las Vegas, Dale moved to New York City for almost 10 years. He worked at Katherine's, The Club 54, and the CBGB's in its heyday and later as a Talent Scout for A&M Records and later he moved to New Orleans for over 10 years, and all across the southern states, including the Caribbean, working as a professional Poker Dealer. After Hurricane Katrina flooded his home in Louisiana, Dale ended up living in Glenwood, Arkansas.
He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Tod Ashmun. Dale leaves behind his son Christopher Bang; brothers Jay Ashmun of Lincoln, Nebraska; Ray Ashmun of Portland, Oregon.

Sad news about Dale Ashmun. Didn't know him well but he struck me as one of the coolest but low-profile guys at LSE. Looked him up last year and we spoke for awhile. He was preparing to deal at a big poker tournament. Said he had a son.
During our chat, found out that he got very involved in the music biz and was around some of the top groups of the 70's. So, we had some similar experiences to talk about. I worked for the top concert producer in the US (Feyline ) out of Denver. Did bodyguard/security work, with some of the top acts of the same period.
During the 70's, rock and roll was a very fun and crazy biz with GREAT music. My ears (and body) are both shot now, but had some 'interesting' experiences - on and back stage at concerts.

I always really liked Dale. We grew up together as part of our neighborhood "gang"
Never saw him after LSE graduation but he was always pleaseant and happy to be around
Very private kind of guy--perhaps that was our "draw"

I'm shocked and so very sad to hear on my dear and close friend Dale Buddy's passing that I just heard about today! Truly Dale was one of my best friends throughout all these years and had no idea of Dales operation & death until now! I'm really heartbroken that I didn't get to say the proper goodbye to one of my first friends going back to Sheridan School! We have spent so many fantabulous times together and now that I'm living in NYC can only reminisce about the times spent here together! Yes, Dale dared to not be a followers but an adventurer and sometimes I was a little taken back by his various endeavors but he knew how to live life to the fullest with a kind and caring heart and lived life with an energy and vibe unique to Dale and taught me at an early age to always be proud and dare to be different which I am to this day! I'm expressing my love and thanks for being my teacher in so many ways and will always have a special place in my heart for Dale my buddy and the many good times spent! There is a tear in my eye and an emptiness in my heart ❤️ Your remembered on this day and all days for being a true friend i'm so many ways Thanks for You just being You! Alan or as Dale used to say the Big A🙏🤪<>>

I was surprised and saddend to learn of Dale's passing. During our senior year, when Rita Shaw adopted me, I lived next door to Dale on Sewell St. Dale's basement was THE gathering place for our "gang". I believe Dale had a pinball machine and I know he had hundreds of record albums. I learned a ton about the 1960s music from listening to all that music and Dale's summary of the band.
I also recall spending countless hours in his basement playing cards.....primarily hearts and spades but also some poker. My memory is not what it used to be but I still recall some of those card players. I recall Rich Stewart, Greg Shaw, Alan Sands, Bob Martens, Jim Carter....and know I am forgetting many more. Chime in if you were a participant or witness....statute of limitations has expired. :)
Decades passed after high school without contact. Then, in 2017 I did hear from Dale. He was on his way from Glenwood, AR to Las Vegas to deal at the World Series of Poker. He stopped by in Lake Havasu City where Louise and I had just retired to from Winter Park, Colorado. He spent a couple of days and we were able to catch up. Louise and I had some appointments one of the days Dale was visiting and I asked if he wanted to ride along....no he would entertain himself. When we got home in the afternoon Dale was out back in the pool with a beer floating on his "traveling air matress" which he brought with him when he traveled....talked about buying it at the local thrift store for 50 cents....and getting to use it on his travels. He commented upon our return from our appointments that "this is the life" from his air mattress in the pool. He was sure an easy going guy.
Then, in 2021 we had the chance to see Dale again as he was returning from the World Series of Poker tournament. He stayed for only a couple of nights and was on his way to visit friends in Bisbee, Arizona for a couple of days on his way home. He told us with the intended stops and visits with friends along the way it would likely take him two weeks to get back to Glenwood.
I particularly enjoyed his stories from the WSOP. He met all of the professional poker greats and dealt to all of them over the years. Dale offered to "take me around on the inside" of the WSOP if I would drive up to Las Vegas.....never made it....a regret.
I saw Dale again at our 2022 LSE reunion and got to visit again. He was "winding down" on the traveling poker dealer career and looking to spend more time at what he called his "Walden Pond". I sent him a birthday message in March and never heard back. I now suspect he was in the midst of his initial heart treatments. I wondered what was up because Dale was always good about staying in touch. I really looked forward to seeing him next month at the reunion.
Lots of great memories my friend! You lived a diverse life! You will be missed by many!

Sad news about my life long friend Dale . Like a lot of people Ash would give me a call every couple of years and we would get together for lunch or to just hang out . I always looked forward to hearing from him. I contacted him in 2024 but we never connected. We talked once about dying and he said that when he was gone he didn't want anybody grieving or to feel any sadness but that's a tough ask.
