Douglas M. Nutt, age 59, of Delta, Colo. passed away Tuesday evening, June 14, 2011 in the presence of his loving family, at The Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction after a one year battle with Leukemia. He is survived by his parents, Bernard and Darlene Nutt, his wife Viola Fresquez-Nutt, and daughter, Erin Nutt, three sons, Daniel, Damon and Dana Nutt; one brother, Dave Nutt and his wife Pam, one nephew and one niece, two granddaughters and three grandsons.
After receiving a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska, Douglas served as a captain with Colorado State Department of Corrections, retiring after 30 years. He was a private man of many talents, convictions, depth and integrity. He possessed a sensitivity and love for animals, fostering many homeless and volunteering his time in rescuing strays. He generously contributed towards various causes. He was a collector of antiques, a carpenter of perfection and beauty, had a magical, nurturing green thumb and was an amazingly gifted blues musician. He was an honorable man with a very unique sense of humor he and his soul mate shared through the years, God blessed them, with together. Douglas had a passion to ride his harley, embracing and savoring the pleasure of freedom the riding provided. Douglas, not religious but spiritual, a servant of God, he rode off to the heavens with the wings of the angels, continuing freely on his spiritual journey in time.

Doug and I shared an apartment for a couple of months our senior year during that time Doug adopted a pet duck with a broken wing and he found a baby coyte on the road and took that in too. Life was never dull around Doug . We'll all miss him

This comment comes way too late, but I just discovered this section of our LSE site, so I want to comment on how special Doug was to me and so many people, by sharing a few memories.
I remember first meeting Doug at Iriving and being impressed by his ability to dub his friends with funny nicknames. I was dubbed Ashy Banana, which later got shortened to Banana and that's pretty much what Doug always called me.
During our senior year Doug resided with my family on Sewell Street for a month or so and was quite welcomed into our family. I have a very vivid memory of going to see EASY RIDER upon its intial release, and how that movie really influenced Doug. The day after graduation, Doug, Ron Aiken, Rich Stewart and I set off for a summer vacation in California in Doug's "Scramblin' Rambler" (I think we had to replace at least two bald tires along the 1300 trek). We rented two motel rooms in Seal Beach, CA for a month and chased the elusive California dream circa 1970. One highlight was seeing The Who, Leon Russell, John Sebastian and Blues Image perform at all day outdoor extravaganza in Anaheim Stadium. One lowlight was poor "Swakey Aikey" (another Dougism) getting stung by jellyfish his first time in the ocean.
I believe Doug is riding his chopper with Dennis Hopper in heaven, waiting for Peter Fonda to join them when the time is right. I think of you often amigo.
