Coach/Teacher Denny Pueltz told Ron Strnad and I that we had to do additional wind-sprints and run the "ladder" after football practice, because we had missed a Saturday morning football practice because of playing in our rock group "The People." Coach Pueltz told me after that long practice that I had to choose between football and playing guitar in the rock band. I turned in my football gear the next day and never looked back. Ron Strnad had several state records for the 100 yard dash and was given a bit more lee-way; he was allowed to continue football and play music in our band. I am grateful for Coach Pueltz firmly pushing me towards playing guitar - I was and am a better guitar player than offensive left tackle! I organized the 1990 Reunion tour of Lincoln Southeast, and arranged to have a lot of our teachers and school staff waiting inside the front door to greet the returning 1970 alums. Coach Bill Stephenson stood in the lobby with tears streaming down his face recalling how much he loved our class and Southeast. Mrs. Ruff forgave me for my horrible French. Mrs. Murphy - when asked why she unfairly kicked me out of class one day, responded and asked me if I had ever acted up in her class and hadn't gotten caught for doing so. I told her that I had indeed acted up, so she said, "we're even!" A final story - Mrs. Kunkle had arranged a parent/student/counselor conference to go over whether or not I was going to college, and if so, what prep work was needed. During that conference, she opened my file and said that "Scott had been absent, tardy or truant 86 times," and actually had a list of when/what/where etc. She told my parents that I shouldn't plan on going anywhere and that I didn't have the focus for college. I lost my keys and driving privileges - my father was steamed. But that "challenge" that Joyce gave me that day helped me to in effect get better grades, which I then did so for the remainder of 11th and 12th grade. I'm grateful for the time spent at Southeast - much more so now than then!
